Danielle “CALIBIRD” Fernandez is a Bayview HP, San Francisco–based multidisciplinary artist, illustrator, designer, and cultural worker whose practice is rooted in drawing, storytelling, nature, music, memory, and imagination. Raised in the Bay Area and shaped by its countercultures, house music community, and ecological landscape, she creates intricate surreal worlds where plants, animals, human figures, symbols, and hybrid beings coexist.
Working primarily through detailed hand-drawn linework, she expands her imagery into illustration, fashion, objects, and immersive environments. Her ongoing body of work, The Fifth World, explores transformation, interdependence, ecological reciprocity, ancestral memory, and the possibility of renewal during periods of social and personal upheaval. Humor, joy, tenderness, and the perspective of her inner child run alongside more complicated questions of responsibility, loss, repair, and what we owe one another and the living world.
Her work is on current display at The Fold and at District Oakland.
She studied at San Francisco State University and Parsons School of Design in New York. Her creative life has also included teaching and mentoring young people, designing artwork for the house music community, and community-based environmental work for Dragonspunk in San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point. She worked for 20+ years in neuroscience research; most recently in the Stanley Prusiner Lab at UCSF.
